Nothing beats shipping: Silverlight 1.0 is here!

Today Microsoft announced the debut release of Silverlight, the new cross-browser, cross-platform technology for developing compelling media experiences and RIAs. I joined the Silverlight effort around November of 2006 from working on WPF 3.5 feature areas, and it has been a wonderful ride. Working on two different product releases – Silverlight 1.0 and 1.1 - simultaneously is a very unique experience not easily summarized in a blog post. The kind of stuff this team has done in a matter of months is nothing short of amazing. We joke internally about how someday books will be written about these episodes; and needless to say, about the giants upon whose shoulders people like me stood. But for now, I’m happy and tremendously fortunate to have been a part of shipping a great product that millions will use and love.

Congratulations to my colleagues on the Silverlight team and the leadership in Microsoft’s Developer Division.

Get Silverlight.

I had installed 1.0RC couple weeks back.

Now, when I navigate to MS home page and click on the Silverlight promotion image (or any of the download links to shipping1.0), I get an error.

I have the same issue on IE7 (on VISTA and XP), Safari and FireFox (all of which has 1.0RC).

Hope this is an isolated case and is not the case with every browser with 1.0RC.

  • So on one of my machines I uninstalled the release candidate and was able to get to the download and install it, though at the confirmation page it said thanks for installing the Silverlight 1.0 Release Candidate so I don't know if I have the RC or the 1.0 at this point. All I do know is that the apps I have on the web that I made for 1.0RC are still working the way they're supposed to be working.

  • Doesn't seem to work in Opera for Windows. Not quite as cross browser compatible. Then again the license doesn't even mention Opera ( on windows or Mac ) so it is to be expected.

  • Re network issues: there was a snafu on the web site that was eventually sorted out. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Re Opera: we're certainly looking at broadening our browser/platform support. Keep the feedback coming.
